Thank you for an amazing first 10 years!
December 23, 2020
2020 has been a tough year. But we’re celebrating.
It’s safe to say that for most people, 2020 has been a difficult year. Whether you’re an essential worker, had to transition to working from home while finding a way to homeschool your children, or were furloughed for some or all of the past few months, life has required some big adjustments and difficult choices.
Here at Apex, 2020 meant something else: This month, we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary. And while it sometimes feels odd to be ‘celebrating’ in a year like this, the truth is that for most of the year, we’ve felt very thankful: For our clients and customers, for our fantastic Apex team members, and for being able to continue to grow in our community here in Southwestern Ontario.
As some of you may know, I’ve been in pest control for a number of years now, but it wasn’t until 2010 that Julie and I decided to make Apex our full-time focus. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking to make a move like that, but we genuinely felt like we had a mission. Pest control has never been the world’s most glamourous business, but it’s a necessary one – and we wanted to find a way to do it better.
We didn’t do everything right, of course
There are enormous challenges and obstacles in starting a business. The fastest way to learn is through your mistakes and adjust quickly. We were very fortunate to surround ourselves with great people, mentors, team members and clients who helped form our service culture.
What we’ve learned
We’ve learned that there’s no substitute for genuine knowledge: Knowledge of pests, of pest control methods, of health and environmental standards, and of how integrated pest management works in different structures and environments. Year after year, it’s our knowledge which has helped us ensure our clients get the services they need, when they need them, with a can do attitude in a professional manner.
More importantly, we’ve learned that people are the most important component of our business. We knew, going in, that we wanted to ensure that our technicians were well-trained and reliable, but as we grew, we learned that training and retaining great technicians – some of whom have now been with us for almost our whole tenure of 10 years, in one way or another – all are the backbone of our success. No one looks forward to their locations requiring service treatments, but we know that many of our clients do look forward to seeing their Apex technicians, and we’re proud of that.
What matters most
If you live or work in one of the buildings we service regularly, you may have seen our food drive boxes in your lobby or common areas, and you may have wondered, “Why the heck is the pest control company doing a food drive?”
But in fact, giving back has been part of Apex since the beginning. Businesses can’t truly be part of the communities they serve without recognizing that some people in those communities need help, and 2020 has put that into sharp relief. Over the years we’ve supported organizations from Good Shepherd, Wesley Urban Ministries, United Way, and HDAA. That’s been one of the great unexpected benefits of growing successfully: We’ve been able to help more organizations, in more substantial ways – which in turn makes going to work every day even more fulfilling.
No business, or business owners, are successful alone. So, on our 10th anniversary, we wanted to take the time to say ‘thank you’ to the clients who’ve supported us, the employees we’ve loved working with, and the residents who have made our jobs easier in tough times. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We look forward to another great 10 years!
